![]() However, the movie makes no mention of Cleopatra's children with Mark Antony. ![]() We know that Cleopatra and Mark Antony did, in fact, have a relationship and also have children. We see his death scene where, after a series of brutal stabbings by others, his (supposed) natural son Brutus gives him a final blow to which Caesar remarks, "You to, Brutus?"Ĭleopatra's affair with Mark Antoney is also mentioned in the movie where it is only touched upon in Shaw's play. Caesar's life in the movie, however, is shorter than that of Cleopatra and Mark Antony. We see him show some degree of acknowledgemeant towards Cleopatra and it is obvious to the viewer that he has developed a liking towards her. In the movie, Caeser is also closer to his actual personality. The movie also shows Cleopatra as having some intuative notion and insight upon the death of Caesar. Between Caesar and Cleopatra, we also see the love interest that began between the two as well as the child which they had. In the movie, we see Cleopatra first meeting Caesar after having herself wrapped in a rug in order for her presence to go otherwise unnoticed. The relationship Cleopatra shared with Caesar is also closer to that which actually happened. Cleopatra is also shown in the movie as being a woman of power and respect. This image of Cleopatra is probably much more accurate when compared with that of Shaw. In this movie, Cleopatra is shown as a well-educated woman of strength and conviction. These are shown in various ways however, they are most prominant in the relationships shared by Cleopatra and Caesar and Cleopatra and Mark Antony. While the movie Cleopatra shows Cleopatra in a better light, there are still a great deal of historical inaccuracies. To see a profile of Bernard Shaw, click here. This is in direct contrast to the historical accounts of Caesar which have recored his demeanor as being much different! In the play, Caesar is likable, amiable and caring. He is a person to be admired and adhered to. Cleopatra, in the play, is unable to concentrate on little else but Caesar.Ĭaesar, on the other hand, is shown as a rightoues and good man who helps those in need rather than a tyrannical and hard handed ruler.Ĭaesar's actions are thought of as noble and brave. Shaw has Cleopatra fall into a predisposed stereotype of a women in love. Cleopatra, in the play, is flighty and somewhat dimwitted. The play depicts Cleopatra as a stereotypical, spoiled female whose motivations lead her only to attempt to get the man whom she desires rather than power or respect. This is recognized upon Caesar's receiving the rug, because he immediately asks for Cleopatra to be taken back to Egypt. With this as her motivation, we see Cleopatra's character in the play as an overbearing young girl who does little more than get in Caesar's way. Caesar teases her, and Cleopatra is shown as a flighty, somewhat dimwitted little child over whelmed by her own fears.Ī distorted version of the true meeting of Caesar and Cleopatra is shown later in the play, however it is spoken of as an attempt by an obsessive Cleopatra to see Caesar once again. Cleopatra, not knowing the true identity of Caesar, explains that she is very frightened by the approach of Caesar. In the play, Caesar accidently comes across Cleopatra as he is walking toward a sphinx and she is purched on one of its paws. In the play, Cleopatra is a young girl of sixteen however, history shows that she was older, around the age of twenty or twenty-one.Īnother example of the poetic license taken by Shaw was his account of HOW Cleopatra and Caesar met. One of the most significant changes made by Shaw was the age of Cleopatra on her initial meeting with Caesar. In decifering Shaw's historical inaccuracies, we must first examine his portrayal of Cleopatra. It is apparent, very early in the play, that Shaw's details are somewhat off the mark. In the play Caesar and Cleopatra by Bernard Shaw, we are shown a fictional tracing of the relationship shared by Caesar and Cleopatra. “If any type of storm is coming in and they’re predicting a pretty severe tidal surge, get out,” he said. They were ultimately safe, but he wishes they had left. He, his wife and their two kids stayed during the storm and the water filled their entire first floor that night, reaching up to “two inches below the subfloor” of his second story, he said. In Hamilton Beach, a coastal community in southern Queens, Roger Gendron says he won’t ever think twice about evacuating after living through Superstorm Sandy in 2012. Just because your home may normally have a minimal flood risk - according to insurance-based maps - doesn’t mean you won’t have to evacuate. There are six evacuation zones in the city, with zone 1 being the most likely to flood.īear in mind: the evacuation zones are drawn differently than flood risk maps designed for insurance purposes, which you can find with this look-up tool from FloodHelpNY from the Center for NYC Neighborhoods.Īnd evacuation orders, if the city issues them, are “based on the characteristics of an actual storm as it is approaching the city,” OEM says, not generic flood risk maps. Here are some of the storm prep basics from the city - and New Yorkers who learned the hard way when Sandy hit ten years ago. But there are concrete steps New Yorkers can take to be better prepared before extreme weather arrives in our coastal city. Between downpours of rainwater and storm surges from the ocean - like with Superstorm Sandy in 2012 - the potential for flooding both near the coasts and further inland is high in the city.Ībsent comprehensive city planning, there’s only so much any lone individual can do once the water is rising. “As the city looks to fund physical improvements, looking at the geographic implications and looking at the vulnerabilities where upgrades haven’t been made will certainly figure into the city strategy and should.”Ī spokesperson for DEP declined to comment on the new stormwater maps.Īs New York saw most recently with Ida, flooding from heavy rain can be both destructive and deadly. “The maps are one step in what’s really a long-term, multi-pronged process to create stronger climate resilience in the city,” Imas said. Karen Imas, vice president of programs for the Waterfront Alliance, called the maps a “powerful resource for individual property owners, building owners and tenants,” that can help them understand their risks - immediately and in the long run - and encourage them to make a game plan ahead of time. ![]() New York Giants rally for comeback win, Saquon Barkley suffers injury This approach, emphasizing personal responsibility, marks a slight shift from the de Blasio-era New Normal plan, which laid out a series of commitments from city agencies to protect and prepare New Yorkers for the next storms. It’s part of a new campaign from the Department of Environmental Protection called Rainfall Ready, which spells out what both city government and residents must do to prepare for storms that only stand to become more intense and dangerous as a result of climate change. The map - which the city plans to update in August to factor in extreme events and future sea-level rise - is an updated version of one that the de Blasio administration originally created in 2021, which did not indicate current risk. For reference, 3.15 inches of rain fell in Central Park in an hour during Hurricane Ida last year. The map shows the risk of stormwater flooding during a “moderate event,” or a storm with two inches of rain in an hour. Get Tri-state area news and weather forecasts to your inbox. |
